Chemicals Are Rarely The Topic Of Conversation

September 13, 20223 min read

Most people believe that their food choices have the largest impact on health, but the truth is that what you put onto and into your body other than food, can be just as detrimental to your health. This does not mean that your food choices don’t matter. They most certainly do.

I may be partially responsible for furthering this mistruth. Food seems to monopolize conversation and it’s the topic people most often ask me about. “What do you eat?” “How do you manage when you travel?” “Do you have a recipe for _______?”

The topic of food is probably what my clients ask me the most about, therefore, I spend a lot of time talking about it.

And what you choose to eat is very important. However, the sneaky chemicals you’re exposed to multiple times a day may also be wreaking havoc on your health. And they may be more problematic than what you eat, since you probably aren't stopping to think about them.

Don’t get me wrong, these sneaky chemicals show up in your food too. One of the first things I teach my clients about is how to read food labels. Then, we re-define what food is and spend time talking about the difference between whole foods and packaged, processed foods.

But chemicals are rarely the topic of conversation. Maybe that’s because people don’t know a lot about them or about how problematic they can be. I’ve never heard anyone talking about endocrine disruptors or obesogens, unless I’m at a convention or talking with other health practitioners.

So, my theory is that most of my friends, family, and clients don’t realize how dangerous these chemicals are. An endocrine disruptor is a chemical or chemical compound that can interfere with the endocrine or hormonal systems. This can lead to cancers, birth defects, developmental disorders…

An obesogen is a chemical that alters your fat storage, changes metabolic setpoints, disrupts energy balance, or modifies the way your body is supposed to tell you when your full or hungry. Basically, they're chemicals that make us fat.

But knowing what they are is just the first step. More importantly is figuring out what products you're using that contain these chemicals. Start by looking at the labels on your pre-packaged and processed foods. Then, read labels on the household products you have underneath your kitchen sink, in your bathroom medicine cabinet, and in your shower.

The products I encourage my clients to switch out first are toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, and body lotion. Followed closely by your household cleaners, laundry soap, and fabric softener. If you’re using candles or other scents in your home, you might want to re-think the safety of those too.

Ingredients to focus on first are "fragrance" and "natural flavoring". I teach about all of this and much more inside my signature program, the 90-Day Jumpstart. If you want an insiders-view of that program, then head on over to our services page and check out the three free videos, taken directly from the 90-Day Jumpstart. You can learn all about inflammation, your energy tank, and a little bit about weight loss.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can serve you in any way.
